The geothermal water in this part of Poland comes up from deep underground naturally warm, mineral rich and slightly sulphurous, and the complex at Chochołów makes generous use of it with a sprawling outdoor section of pools at different temperatures. Steam rises off the water even on cold winter days, and floating outside while snow falls around you is genuinely one of the more memorable experiences on offer near Zakopane. There are usually saunas, indoor pools, jet massage areas and quieter corners for people who just want to soak rather than swim laps. It sits some distance west of Zakopane itself, in the village of Chochołów, so it generally needs a car or an organised bus rather than a casual walk, and it works best as a planned half day or evening trip rather than a spontaneous stop. Families tend to enjoy the slides and shallower pools, while couples and older visitors often gravitate towards the calmer thermal sections further from the entrance.
