The region sits on a large geothermal basin, and several sizeable complexes nearby tap into it to fill their pools. The water comes up naturally warm from deep underground, which means the outdoor pools stay comfortable regardless of the air temperature above them. Sitting neck deep in steaming water in winter, with snow on the ground and mountains behind, is a genuinely different kind of experience from a normal swimming pool, and it is one of the more memorable things you can do here without any hiking involved.
Most complexes combine several pools of different temperatures with saunas, slides and quieter relaxation zones, so they suit a wide range of moods and ages on the same visit. Families tend to gravitate toward the livelier sections while couples or solo travellers often drift to the calmer pools further from the entrance.

The big complexes sit outside town, so plan a bus, taxi or organised transfer rather than assuming you can walk there.
