Best photo spots

Where the light and the view actually line up, rather than just where everyone else is standing.

The range faces north from town, which has a direct effect on how it photographs through the day. Morning light hits the peaks fairly directly and picks out detail in the rock, while late afternoon brings warm, low side light that rakes across the ridgelines and makes the whole range look almost sculpted. Midday sun, by contrast, tends to flatten everything into a fairly ordinary blue silhouette, so it is worth timing a visit around either end of the day if photographs matter to you.

Local tip

The wooden houses on ul. Kościeliska photograph best in soft, overcast light, when the diffuse sky lets the fine detail in the carved woodwork show through. Harsh direct sun tends to flatten the carving into shadowless shapes and loses most of that texture.
